Kilim rugs

A kilim rug is a type of carpet, and is also the name of the weaving technique used to make them. Kilim carpets are made in the Taurus mountains of Turkey and in north west Iran.

gabeh rug

Gabbeh rugs

Gabbeh means natural and primitive in Persian. Carpets and rugs are weaved by the Qashqai nomads and in towns in south west Iran. The yarn is treated and teased by hand, coloured and weaved at a thickness of up to 2 cm. Gabbeh carpets are simple, with often mono-coloured patterns.

turkish rug

Turkish rugs

Something that sets Turkish rugs apart from other carpets is that the designs very seldom depict animals or people. Turkey is a muslim country and the Coran strictly prohibits depictions of people and animals. Instead, prayer and geometric patterns are used.

The Turkish rug (also called Anatolic rug) has long played an central role for the Turkish people. The oldest Turkish carpet that has been found is more than 800 years old and is kept in the city of Konya, south of Ankara.

turkisk matta

Oriental rugs

These carpets have cleaner patterns with fewer details than Persian and Turskish rugs. Older ornaments and symbols from silk weavings, ceramics, and other forms of oriental artworks are often used. Most of these patterns can be categorized as religious or philosophical.

Two techniques are used when making oriental rugs: Open back, and closed back.

The best thing with rugs is that they are timeless and will most likely even outlive us. Kilim rugs, Turkish rugs, and Oriental rugs provide us with plenty of warmth, colour, and mystique here in the cold North.

I hope you’re now inspired to pick up a lovely thick Orential rug to hot up your floor at home:)

Have a great weekend and a LOVING Valentines day :)
