Facts about om Moroccan tiles: Zellige

Zellige is one of the most important properties of Moroccan architecture. It consists of geometric patterns in ceramic, and is used primarily to decorate walls, ceilings, fountains, floors, tables etc.

The creation of Zellige is seen as an artform in itself, and is generally passed on in families between maâlems (master) and apprentice. An apprentice begins their long education in their early childhood.

Attention to detail is extremely important in the creation of Zellige patterns. Small piece of tile are arranged in a geometric structure like a kigsaw puzzle to create a finished mosaic. The processen has not changed in hundreds of years.
